Considering my making plans for 2024, I have resolved to actually do rather than hyper-procrastinate. you see the thing is that my brain likes everything lined up to be done and that includes making. I want all the raw materials to hand, all the available documentation ready to be read (though to my shame it is rarely read in advance), all the tools I could need on the desk or somewhere desk adjacent (to the point of over buying tools) and all the plans planned to complete the job to perfection.
And then I need to be in the right frame of mind to actually do anything with all that lot.
And when I am done and the result isn’t perfect I am disappointed and blame myself.
Well no more for 24. It’s going to be the year where things are done and done from what is available and already to hand as quickly as possible and with as many acceptable bodges as is reasonable.
And that isn’t just for making. I’m going to try this for all my side coding projects too. Use the tools I have and what I can solve and apply it faster.
Why?
I started this years Advent of Code and was just two days in when I saw a chance to make something someone wanted. That was an extension to ls-go so it could sort by metadata tag for music files. And it was more rewarding than the AoC. And I hadn’t had to go through my hyper-procrastinating prep phase. It was this that led me to thinking about my process and what was wrong with it. I’m jumping on the over prep as the first stop and seeing how it goes. Wish me luck… and focus.
